This is a nostalgic trip down memory lane featuring romantic duets, arias and songs from musicals and operas from the first half of the 20th century.
This musical compilation was largely inspired by a Nelson Eddie & Jeanette McDonald production which Tinus and Marina presented at the Brooklyn Theatre in 2013, and repeated at the Gauteng International Music Festival in 2016.
The concept evolved organically into this programme - Sweethearts, extending the musical boundaries to some extent to involve Cole Porter and even Gershwin. As a married couple, performing together, these two fine young opera singers, are a pleasure to experience on stage and in this video performance.
Tinus and Marina both featured in Brooklyn Theatre productions such as The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Wiener Blut and A Night in Venice among others. In addition they also performed with the GPO in the Disney Magic programme, as well as many Salon Music concerts and recitals.
Marina has featured in major opera, operetta and musical theatre roles at Brooklyn Theatre in the past few years, including Michaela Carmen, Pamina The Magic Flute, Adele Die Fledermaus, Eliza Doolittle My Fair Lady and Hodel Fiddler on the Roof.
Tinus Spies has veered extensively into the comprimario field of opera singing i.e. portrayals of comic roles per se. In addition Tinus has also been responsible for excellent stage direction of operas at Brooklyn Theatre such as Carmen, La Traviata, The Magic Flute and Norma.
