Brooklyn Theatre TV is proud to present a recital by a remarkable young South African pianist.
The programme features a well balanced selection of solo piano works from the 17th to the 20th century.

The recital was recorded on a Model D Hamburg Steinway in October 2021, by the Brooklyn Theatre TV team in the home of the SA artist Portchie Viljoen in Stellenbosch.

Gerhard Joubert is a 2nd year BMus (Piano performance) student of Prof. François du Toit at the University of Cape Town. He has appeared as soloist with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions playing first movements of piano concertos by Mozart, Schumann and Chopin.

2 September 2021, he recorded Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Bernhard Gueller conducting the CPO. The performance was broadcast online. Gerhard also performed Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the Namibian National Symphony Orchestra (NNSO) in 2021. In addition Gerhard recently collaborated with Cape Town City Ballet as the pianist for nine performances of Les Sylphides at Artscape where he performed the music of Chopin with ballet dancers.

Gerhard is a laureate of several national music competitions, including first prizes in the Johann Vos and the Pieter Kooij Competitions. In March 2018 at the national Hennie Joubert Piano Competition in Stellenbosch, he was awarded the silver medal and two special prizes for the best performance in the third round and the best performance of a classical sonata.

The following year, he was awarded the silver medal and several special prizes in the National Youth Music Competition. Gerhard was a member of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir from 2011 to 2014, touring Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa and Europe. He also performed as a soprano soloist with the choir.
